rules

covering on the dining table not only looks attractive but helps to protect the table surface. It adds color, keeps the table top clean, and adds to the picture you are trying to create. A place mat is usually about 16 to 18 inches (40 to 45 centimeters) long and about 12 to 14 inches (30 to 35 centimeters) wide. When used on the table, the rectangular mat is placed with one long edge even with the table edge. A round mat, on the other hand, can be placed close to the table edge or allowed to hang over just a little. Set the mats an equal distance apart and at the same distance from the table edge. This gives a neat and pleasing look.

When placing the other tableware on the dining table, follow these simple guidelines:

Flatware:

1) Place each knife, fork, and spoon 1 inch (2.5 centimeters) from the edge of the table.

2) If the meal requires the use of more than one knife, or fork, or spoon per person, arrange the pieces so the piece to be used first is placed farthest from the plate.

3) Place knives and spoons at the right of the plate.

4) Place the knife next to the plate, with the cutting edge toward the plate.

5) Place the forks at the left of the plate, with tines, or prongs turned up.

6) Place the forks or spoons for desserts when that course is brought to the table.
